Elon Musk and Jean-Michel Jarre lead tributes to Vangelis – Music News

Elon Musk, Jean-Michel Jarre and Daniel Pemberton have paid tribute to late Greek composer Vangelis.

The Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire composer died in a hospital in Paris, France on Tuesday due to heart failure, according to his assistant Lefteris Zermas. Vangelis, full name Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, was 79.

After the announcement of his death on Thursday, Tesla founder Musk took to Twitter to pay tribute, writing, “Good night, sweet maestro, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Meanwhile, French musician Jarre commented, “Dear Vangelis, we will all remember your unique touch and your moving melodies forever. You & I have always shared the same passion for synthesizers and electronic music since so long… May you Rest In Peace.”

And Academy Award-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton posted, “Oh man. Vangelis. One of my all time heroes. He changed everything. Very very sad to hear.”

Elsewhere, The Walking Dead composer Bear McCreary added, “Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner were among the most innovative and influential scores in the history of the medium. My personal favourite melody of his was Conquest of Paradise. A true musical pioneer.”

The European Space Agency’s official Twitter also chimed in, telling users: “We are very sad to hear that #Vangelis has passed away. Fascinated by music and its connections to science, he was a good friend of ESA and the space community. His work has inspired millions of people, and we were honoured to work with him on the #Rosetta album.”

Vangelis won an Academy Award for his Chariots of Fire score in 1982 and also worked on films including Missing, Alexander, The Bounty, and 1492: Conquest of Paradise.
