Fab.com is the new home for Epic 3D content – now go claim free stuff

Textures and scenes, trees and architecture – Epic consolidated all their stores for Unreal, Fortnite, and 3D creators (even rival Unity) on what they call Fab back in late October. The dust has settled, and you should go claim some free content if you haven’t already – including a ton of spectacular Megascans for Unreal Engine.

One of the many sources for free goodies in Unreal Engine-land has long been the Quixel content. Grab a perfect sand texture, add a tree, or even find whole scenes. Now is an essential time to go grab that and stock up on your account, because now everything is moving to Fab.

Epic merged the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab store, Quixel content, and Quixel Megascans into a single marketplace at Fab.com. That marketplace in turn is set up not only for Unreal Engine creators and developers, but also Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN, which is built on the Unreal Engine), and even Unity 3D. (They also promise “other digital content creation tools,” but we’ll see if that gets any specific support.)

This also replaces the Quixel Bridge we used to grab textures and Megascans. So, if you encounter a tutorial referring to picking up a sand texture in Quixel Bridge, now that means going to Fab.

I didn’t write about this in October because there were some growing pains in the transition to what Epic has dubbed Fab (fab.com). But Fab is working perfectly now, and content creators have caught up.

I think even novice Unreal users are going to want to dive in. It’s Epic, so you know the drill from the Epic Games Launcher / Epic Games Store. There is a constant stream of free promotional content.

What’s surprising here is Epic includes a lot of content with full licenses that you can use on paid projects. That will make this a must for individual creators making prototypes and demos and trying to get work – but I even see some freebies with pro licenses for people making more than $100k, too.

But they’re making a chance that means you need to grab the free content now. You have until December 31 to grab all the free Megascans from Quixel, which give you tons of materials – textures, trees, full environments, uh, Wild West saloons, the lot – under a pretty generous standard license.

If you’re not eager to crowd your hard drive, fret not – you click claim once, and then it’s there any time you suddenly need a beach or an abandoned construction site.

The bad news is that this library won’t be free starting in 2025 if anyone fails to grab it now (see the FAQ), but Epic promises more free Quixel content in the coming year, so I’m sure we’ll be in the usual “check the marketplace” routine we are with Epic’s games.

Epic quietly posted a note on the Quixel to Fab transition late last month. The “legacy” part here is just the old Quixel.com / Bridge marketplace. Starting on November 22 and running through December 31, you do need to claim these scans. Annoyingly, if you don’t, they’ll actually disappear from your library.

Also, out of this massive library, there are a few assets that will disappear from your “Fab My Library,” too. (They won’t be removed from your projects if you’ve downloaded them, so it’s a relatively minor issue, but still worth noting.) From the FAQ:

…a small number of assets (544 in total) from the legacy Megascans library are deprecated as they do not meet our quality standards. These assets will not be available in your Fab My Library. We will make these assets available for download soon in .zip and .tar.gz formats.

Anyway, this counts as your PSA.
