Open call: Ukraine Resistance Radio, amplifying experimental sounds and music of Ukraine

Ukraine Resistance Radio is a new project for amplifying experimental sounds and music of Ukrainian artists and their allies. An open call is up now, with the first broadcast with partner Radio Vilnius on the 19th of March.

This is a project I’m personally glad to join. I’ve talked a lot to Ukrainian friends and colleagues about how music and sound have taken on a new role in their lives since Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country just over a year ago.

It’s been a tool for activism and awareness, for keeping the urgency of Ukraine’s independence in the minds of international audiences when the same repeated phrases weren’t enough. It’s also been an escape, a means of self-expression and emotional processing and even just something to do – for those fleeing the war with their families, for those fighting the war back home. People I know have literally found ways to tinker with machines and modulars and produce on their phone even amidst power outages and army deployments.

I think everyone deserves that space to be human. And that means it’s also important we listen.

Here’s the full call in English and Ukrainian – feel free to share.

UKRAINE RESISTANCE RADIO

Open call – Deadline for first broadcast – 23:59 Wednesday 15 March

The Ukraine Resistance Radio project aims to amplify the experimental sounds and music of Ukrainian artists and their collaborations with International musical allies.

We’re using the medium of radio – online and terrestrial broadcast – as a chance to go beyond words and jam available outlets across Europe and internationally with signals of Ukrainian expression. The first step is collecting sound, including from artists inside the country working amidst power cuts, military service, and other obstacles, and sharing space with Ukrainian artists working abroad.

We encourage any personal expression — surprising and experimental music, field recordings, noise, experimental and DIY electronics, and other sonic inventions that are often at the edges or unheard.

One track per artist, 7 minutes maximum, submitted via the form in English or Ukrainian.

Selected sounds will be played on air on Radio Vilnius on 19 March, with additional sounds and music on other outlets.

Ukraine Resistance Radio is an ad hoc project, curated in partnership between Sophia Bulgakova (UA/NL), Dmytro Fedorenko (UA, Prostir, I Shall Sing Until My Land is Free), Peter Kirn (US/DE, Establishment, CDM), and Andrius Mamontovas (LT).

UKRAINE RESISTANCE RADIO

Open call –

I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free за участю та кураторства Софії Булгакової (UA/NL), Пітера Кірна (US/DE), Дмитра Федоренка (UA/DE) та Андріуса Мамонтоваса (LT).
