Songclip Goes Universal; CD Baby Rides With Peloton – Billboard


Songclip has entered a new partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) and its publishing division Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), providing app creators with easy access to license music legally from some of history’s biggest musicmakers. So far, Songclip has deals with nearly all major music companies, including Warner, Kobalt, UMG and BMG. “Clips are a foundational asset class that drive multiple new revenue streams for artists and their music,” said Andy Blacker, co-CEO and co-founder of Songclip. “We built Songclip to allow for accountable partnerships between apps and the music industry, with a key mission of empowering social consumption and discovery.”

CD Baby has announced a new deal with Peloton to license its catalog for the at-home fitness platform. According to a company press release, CD Baby noted that its users “[did not] need to take any extra step to be eligible,” for consideration. The deal arrives soon after MIDiA’s Recorded Music Market Shares report which predicted that non-DSP revenue, like Peloton, will be key drivers of streaming growth in the near future.

The creation of LA-based boutique publishing division of Maison Arts was recently announced by its co-founders John Scholz, Tyler Goldberg, and Simon Kessler. Partnered with RG Investments and signed to administration with Kobalt Music, Maison Arts is the sister company of JET Management, and has already found success with signees like Suki Waterhouse, Medasin, Eden Prince, John Mark Nelson, Joey Briggs and Vaines.

Kobalt has signed Grammy-winning producer Dem Jointz to a global publishing administration deal, including create and sync services. Jointz, born Dwayne Allen Abernathy Jr., has credits with a number of top selling artists, including Kanye West, Chris Brown, Eminem, Rihanna, and Anderson .Paak. In a company statement Cee Barnett, director of creative for Kobalt says, “from his work with the likes of Dr. Dre and Kanye to crossing over to his massive success in the K-Pop world, his footprint will be around for a very long time.”

Warner Chappell Music has extended its global publishing deal with Jessi Alexander. Known best for co-penning hits like “Don’t Think Jesus” by Morgan Wallen,”Never Say Never” by Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson, “Mine Would Be You” and “Drink On It” by Blake Shelton, and “In Between” by Scotty McCreary. “She is unapologetically country and a true songwriter who is setting a new standard for what that career path can look like,” says Ben Vaughn, President and CEO of WCM Nashville.

Warner Chappell has also inked a global publishing deal with duo The Warren Brothers. Grammy and CMA-nominated country writing troupe is responsible for works like the Good Afternoon America theme, played nearly everyday on ABC. They also wrote songs like “Little Bit of Everything” by Keith Urban, “Feel That Fire” by Dierks Bentley, and “Felt Good on My Lips” by Tim McGraw.

WCM has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with Spanish star Quevedo. Considered one of Spain’s fastest growing singer-songwriters, the artist recently collaborated with Ed Sheeran on his “2step” remix. “He’s an incredible act who’s made a huge impact across Spanish and Latin American music scene in a short time,” explains Javier “Chiki” Dean, A&R director for WCM Spain. “There’s no doubt that we’ve only just scratched the surface of what’s to come from him.”
