John Legend and Common Perform Emotional ‘Glory’ With Choir at 2020 DNC

Prior to Joe Biden’s speech to cap the 2020 Democratic National Convention on Thursday night (Aug. 20), John Legend and Common came together again to honor another great Democrat: Rep. John Lewis, the civil-rights leader who passed away last month at the age of 80.

Following a video package honoring Lewis’ legacy, Legend and Common were shown sharing a stage and launching into “Glory,” the theme song for the 2014 Civil Rights Movement film Selma. While performing to what appeared to be an empty theater, the R&B star and hip-hop veteran were joined by a gospel choir, who were waiting in the wings to eventually harmonize on the song.

“Glory” won the Academy Award for best original song at the Oscars in 2015. Lewis played a prominent role in the Selma to Montgomery marches, and it has been proposed that the historic Edmund Pettis Bridge be re-named in his honor.
